Measurement Guide

Get measured for your custom drysuit

Every Ugly Fish suit is built from scratch around your body. This page walks you through taking the ~20 measurements we need, step by step.

Before You Start

What you need

Flexible tape measure

A standard tailor's tape measure. Rigid rulers and construction tapes will not follow body contours accurately.

Measurement form

Use our online form — it saves your progress, has step-by-step guidance for every measurement, and generates a ready-to-send PDF when you're done.

Your undersuit

Wear the undersuit you plan to dive with. All measurements are taken over it so the drysuit fits perfectly on top.

Tips

Getting accurate measurements

You will need a helper

Many measurements — shoulders, back length, inseam — are impossible to take accurately on your own. Grab a friend, a partner, or anyone willing to hold a tape measure for 15 minutes.

No one available? Three options:

  • Book a video call with us and we will guide you through it live
  • We can arrange a measurement specialist in your area
  • Take the form and video to your local tailor — they take body measurements every day and will get it right

While measuring

  • Wear the undersuit you plan to dive with — all measurements are taken over it so the drysuit fits on top. If you do not have one yet, wear something similar in thickness (a fleece or thermal layer works)
  • Stand naturally with your feet about 30 cm apart, weight even on both feet. Look straight ahead, not down at the tape. Breathe normally — do not suck in your stomach or hold your breath
  • Keep the tape measure snug against the body but not tight. If it leaves an indentation on the skin, it is too tight. If it sags or gaps, it is too loose
  • For all circumference measurements except the head, neck, and wrists, slip one finger between the tape and your body to add a bit of slack
  • Make sure the tape sits level and parallel to the floor for every circumference measurement — it is easy for the tape to ride up in the back without noticing. Your helper should check from behind
  • Neck, wrist, and ankle measurements must be taken against bare skin, not over clothing
  • Red measurements on the form need millimetre precision — these are the critical fit points. All other measurements should be within half a centimetre
  • If any measurement feels off, take it a second time. When two readings differ, go with the larger number
  • Use a proper flexible tailor's tape, not a metal construction tape — rigid tapes do not follow body contours and will give you wrong numbers

Measurement FAQ

Can I take the measurements on my own?

Not really — measurements like shoulders, back length, and inseam are nearly impossible to get right by yourself. You need someone to hold the tape and check it is level. Ask a friend, book a video call with us so we can guide you live, or take the form and video to your local tailor. We can also arrange a measurement specialist in your area.

What if I do not have my undersuit yet?

Wear something similar in thickness — a fleece or thermal layer works fine. Let us know what undersuit you plan to use and we will factor it in.

How accurate do the measurements need to be?

Most measurements should be within half a centimetre. The ones marked in red on the form need millimetre precision — these are the critical fit points like neck, wrists, and ankles.

Can I fill in the form digitally?

Yes! Our online measurement form is the easiest way. It has built-in guidance for every measurement, saves your progress automatically, and generates a branded PDF you can send us. You can also download and print the PDF form if you prefer to fill it in by hand.

What happens after I send my measurements?

We review every submission and cross-check the numbers. If anything looks off we will get in touch before passing them to the Ugly Fish workshop. Once confirmed, your suit goes into production.
